Infamy day: A moment of silence marks 75th anniversary of Pearl Harbor

A moment of silence descended over Pearl Harbor at 7:55 a.m. Hawaii time Wednesday, marking 75 years to the minute when the first Japanese war planes filled the skies Dec. 7, 1941, to lay waste to the Navy’s Pacific fleet and usher the United States into World War II.

TIME magazine names U.S. President-elect Trump Person of the Year

TIME waxes wistfully: "We can scarcely grasp what our generation has wrought by putting a supercomputer into all of our hands, all of the time. If you are reading this, whether on a page or a screen, there is a very good chance that you are caught up in a revolution that may have started with enticing gadgets but has now reshaped everything about how we live, love, work, play, shop, share—how our very hearts and minds encounter the world around us. Why would we have imagined that our national conversation would simply go on as before, same people, same promises, same patterns? Perhaps the President-elect will stop tweeting—but only because he will have found some other means to tell the story he wants to tell directly to the audience that wants to hear it."

"I was the lone American on the judging panel, but like the Canadian judges, I ranked Ontario chardonnays as No. 1 and No. 2, ahead of the oakier Napa examples. They were brilliant: light and crisp, with spiky acidity, succulent layers of lemon-lime and stony flavors, and a flinty elegance missing from the California wines. The two winners, Rosehall Run JCR Vineyard (No. 1) and Closson Chase South Clos (No. 2) reminded me of premiers crus white Burgundies—at a much cheaper price." Prince Edward County wines making their mark.

Rio's recovery: Tiny therapy horse heals from B.C. cougar mauling

Rio the miniature therapy horse is recovering from a major mauling by a huge, dark-coloured cougar in the Webster's Corners area of Maple Ridge, British Columbia. "It was large, probably seven feet long. It was nearly as long as the 10-foot (three-metre fence)." Donations have come from near and far to pay the vet bills.

Angus Reid Institute: 75% of Canadians support a referendum

The Liberal Party’s refusal to commit to holding a referendum is at odds with the desires of most Canadians. Asked whether they would prefer to keep the current FPTP system or change to a different system, more than one-in-five Canadians (21%) say they are undecided on the question. Similarly, fully two-thirds (66%) say changing the way the country votes is a “low priority”. Somewhat lost amid the debate over the committee’s recommendations on proportionality and holding a referendum are some of the committee’s other recommendations – specifically on mandatory voting and lowering the voting age to 16. The committee recommended against both considerations, though it did recommend creating a framework that would allow people to begin registering with the National Register of Electors up to two years before reaching age 18.

Toronto: Auditor General slams Wynne government; says sketchy cap and trade scheme will cost $2B, totally fail to hit emission targets

Ontario Auditor General Bonnie Lysyk slammed the Liberal government in her new annual report released Wednesday. Lysyk reveals that the province's expensive cap and trade program, due to take effect on January 1st, 2017, is projected to make only one-fifth of its targeted greenhouse gas reductions in Ontario. The remainder, says Lysyk, are expected to happen in California and Quebec, as Ontario companies purchase carbon-emission permits from firms in that state and province that have already gone green. ~ Mike Crawley CBC

Two moose were recently discovered frozen in battle and encased in ice near a remote village on Alaska's unforgiving western coast. It was the end of moose rutting season, and the animals were likely fighting over a female moose. Speculation is that one of the animals was wounded by the other animal's antlers, and perhaps died as their antlers were caught together, dragging the rival down with it.

Washington: Trump makes first White House visit as President-elect

U.S. President Barack Obama greeted President-elect Donald Trump at the White House on Thursday to coordinate a smooth transfer of power after the New York real estate developer scored a stunning election victory. The meeting, which Trump said was scheduled for 10 to 15 minutes, lasted 90 minutes and covered a broad range of issues.

Donald Trump: Victory speech, full transcript

"It is time. I pledge to every citizen of our land that I will be President for all of Americans, and this is so important to me. For those who have chosen not to support me in the past, of which there were a few people, I'm reaching out to you for your guidance and your help so that we can work together and unify our great country. As I've said from the beginning, ours was not a campaign but rather an incredible and great movement, made up of millions of hard-working men and women who love their country and want a better, brighter future for themselves and for their family."

Donald Trump wins the Presidency
in stunning upset over Clinton

When the state of Pennsylvania was called for Trump it put him over the 270 electoral vote threshold and he travelled to his campaign headquarters to speak to his supporters. Trump announced that he had received a concession call from Hillary Clinton. He called for national unity and said he would be President of all Americans. Commentators said his remarks were "almost lyrical", filled with grace and humility, in a moment of triumph.

'Greatest living poet': Dylan joins literary giants, only singer-songwriter honoured with Nobel

'How does it feel?' Bob Dylan awarded Nobel Prize for Literature

Despite his massive cultural influence, Dylan has remained an enigmatic presence. With his gravelly tone, he has long won acclaim in spite of rather than because of his voice. "Critics have been giving me a hard time since Day One. Critics say I can't sing. I croak. Sound like a frog," Dylan said last year in an unexpected career-spanning speech as he accepted a lifetime award at the Grammys. His relationship with crowds borders on indifferent to hostile, with Dylan steadfastly refusing to please audiences by rolling out his hits. Performing Friday at the inaugural Desert Trip festival of rock elders in California, Dylan did not say a word to the crowd and kept his back turned, not allowing overhead footage of him for the majority of the audience that could not see.

East Hartford Mayor Marcia Leclerc said Wednesday that Arian Prevalla, the survivor of the crash, told authorities it was intentional. Local police asked the FBI to assist the investigation because it happened near Pratt & Whitney, which makes military and commercial jet engines. Chief Scott Sansom called the jet engine maker “critical infrastructure.” In a statement Tuesday afternoon, the National Transportation Safety Board announced it had turned over the investigation of the crash to the FBI because their probe so far “indicates the crash is the result of an intentional act.”

Bill Clinton shown in Haiti in 2011, where nothing has changed for the better, and Hurricane Matthew has killed nearly 900. In January 2015 a group of Haitians surrounded the New York offices of the Clinton Foundation. They chanted slogans, accusing Bill and Hillary Clinton of having robbed them of “billions of dollars.” Two months later, the Haitians were at it again, accusing the Clintons of duplicity, malfeasance, and theft. And in May 2015, they were back, this time outside New York’s Cipriani, where Bill Clinton received an award and collected a $500,000 check for his foundation. “Clinton, where’s the money?” the Haitian signs read. “In whose pockets?” Said Dhoud Andre of the Commission Against Dictatorship, “We are telling the world of the crimes that Bill and Hillary Clinton are responsible for in Haiti.”

updated Cape Canaveral: Nearly 2 million urged to evacuate
as Hurricane Matthew edges toward U.S.

Windows being covered, hatches battened down along Florida Atlantic coast: Hurricane Matthew has killed at least 16 people in the Caribbean as it cut through Haiti, Cuba and the Bahamas. The storm has been forecast to scrape much of the Florida coast Thursday night, potentially as a Category 4 storm with 210 km/h winds, and any slight deviation could mean landfall or it heading farther out to sea. Either way, forecasters say it is going to be close enough to wreak havoc along the lower part of the East Coast, dumping up to 15 inches in rain in some spots. A storm surge of 5 to 8 feet was expected along the coast from central Florida into Georgia.

Politico: Incompetents: What the FBI Files reveal about
technophobic Hillary Clinton’s jerry-rigged email server

Last Friday, the FBI released the final batch of what amounts to nearly 250 pages of interview notes and reports collected during the course of its investigation. Agents interviewed officials ranging from former Secretary of State Colin Powell to CIA officers to the IT staffer who first rented a minivan to drive the server from Washington to the Clintons’ home in New York. The files also include the FBI’s forensic investigative process and never-before-seen details of the staff decisions that led to the server, the mechanics of Clinton’s email system, and the confusing and balky State Department processes that led a technophobic Clinton to embrace her own BlackBerry.

Two nights of rioting, including closing down and looting trucks on Interstate highways led North Carolina Governor to call in National Guard and state troopers to restore order in Charlotte. Outside paid thugs have been blamed for the escalation of violence after a disputed police shooting. 'Black Lives Matter' ringleader DeRay Mckesson describes rioting as "a cry for justice." He told Yale students that "looting for me isn't violent, it's an expression of anger," and that "The act of looting is political. Another way to dissolve consent. Pressing you to no longer keep me out of this space, by destroying it." But regardless of what such leftists say, there is no right to riot. Seaside Park: Terrorist bomb along New Jersey shore route of Marine charity run would have maimed or killed if event had been on time

The top photo shows the damaged garbage can where other linked, but unexploded bombs were also found after the Saturday morning explosion. Bottom photo shows the narrow island and the location at D Street and Ocean Avenue. The charity run was delayed when an unattended backpack was discovered. That delay likely saved lives and limbs. Seaside Park is located on Barnegat Barrier Island, a dozen miles east of where the Zeppelin 'Hindenburg' blew up at Lakehurst in 1937, and about 40 miles south of New York City.

Vancouver: Will Electra Meccanica Solo at $15,500 be the electric commuter vehicle breakthrough?

Will this be the face and... behind... in your rear-view mirror next year? Priced from $15,500 and with the first deliveries expected in 2017, the Canadian-made Solo uses a synchronous electric motor that generates 82 HP and 140 pound-feet (190 Nm) of torque. This is fed by a 16.1 kWh lithium-ion battery that provides a 100-mile (160 km) range and can recharge in roughly six hours from a 110-volt outlet, and in half the time on a 220-volt system. "It has appeal for driving enthusiasts, practical commuters and the environmentally conscious. We believe the Solo will become the commuter vehicle of choice for the masses. The vehicle is non-polluting, very economical to operate and people will have a heck of a good time driving it too", said Henry Reisner, the Canadian company's COO.

Nearly every American above a certain age remembers precisely where they were on September 11, 2001. But for a tiny handful of people, those memories touch American Presidential history. Shortly after the attacks began, the most powerful man in the world, who had been informed of the second World Trade Center plane in a Florida classroom, was escorted to a runway and sent to the safest place his handlers could think of: The open sky.

Construction began in 1992 and is scheduled to be completed by 2017, just in time for Canada’s 150th anniversary. So far over 87% of the trail is complete, and it already connects most of the major cities in Canada. It's Canada's version of a 'bike path', exclusively designated for recreational purposes: only bikes, hikers and horseback riders allowed in the summer, and cross-country skiers, snowmobiles and ATVs in the winter. ~ Betty Anne Graves (middle)

Kingston: Canada says emotional farewell to The Tragically Hip

Concert-goers treated the 30-song show as a landmark moment in Canadian history: Giant flags made their way through the crowd during the performance, and before the concert began, the audience spontaneously began singing 'O Canada', with nearly everyone rising from their seats.

Kingston abuzz as The Tragically Hip return with an inimitable goodbye

You couldn't walk 10 feet without having a friendly, but urgent media microphone thrust at you in downtown Kingston this afternoon. The line-ups at t-shirt booths were hours-long. Every radio in town is tuned to a station playing The Tragically Hip on Tragically Hip Day. You get the picture. And plenty of pictures being taken, as you see above. Rumours abound. It was broadcast live worldwide by the CBC and more than 25,000 filled Kingston's Market Square for every last note, paying homage to the hometown band made good. The pictures above were taken about 3 hours apart, same location.

Louisiana: Flood victims to Trump: "We knew you would be here"

Donald Trump and Mike Pence came to Louisiana to help, and they quickly got to work helping to distribute relief supplies to flood victims. They were warmly welcomed as people thanked them and asked for autographs. Neither President Obama or Hillary Clinton have come to help, and it's become a campaign issue.

Media that ripped Bush on Katrina ignores Obama on Louisiana flooding

President George W. Bush was torn to shreds in 2005 by mainstream media commentators for his initial response to Hurricane Katrina — yet President Obama’s much more detached response to the recent Louisiana floods has been met with resounding silence from those same outlets.

Aleppo: Social media haunted by image of stoic boy rescued from rubble;
5-year-old Omran Daqneesh had head wounds, was discharged after care

The image of the stunned and weary-looking boy, sitting in an orange chair inside an ambulance, covered in dust and with blood on his face, encapsulates the horrors inflicted on the war-ravaged northern city. Photographs of Omran were widely shared on social media. An hour after his rescue, the building he had been in was completely collapsed. ~ Twitter
