Ontario on the brink - 2016

The poverty of Ontario power
by Ross Ayotte

Ontario Minister of Energy Bob Chiarelli admits the provincial Liberals are awarding wind and solar contracts to companies who paid to attend Liberal fundraising events for him.

Here are some facts about the Liberals' failed energy experiment:

  • 38.6% of your bill is a delivery charge,
  • 11.5% of our bill represents HST,
  • 3% is the regulatory charge;
then keep in mind Ontario is the only province in Canada to have the foregoing charges added to our power bill, which means 53.1% of our bill has nothing to do with how much we use.

Then 47% of our power bill is the cost of electricity used which is produced by nuclear, hydro, gas, wind, solar and biomass -- where our 'global adjustment fee' is blended in. Wind accounts for less than 8% of electricity produced at 3.0 TWh, solar produces 0.07 TWh or less than 1%, biomass produces 0.1 % TWh or less than 1% and the remainder -- over 90% -- comes from nuclear and hydro, and gas-powered thermal plants.

But solar, wind, biomass power adds a huge portion to our hydro bills. As the Ontario Auditor General stated, the province pays 3-1/2 times more for solar it needs to and twice as much for wind -- as a result, we are over-paying by $9.2B on our 20-year wind and solar power contracts.

The Auditor General also stated from 2006-2014 we paid out $37B in 'global adjustment fees' to accommodate this failed experiment; but it gets worse. From 2014 to 2032 Ontarians will have paid an additional $133B more in 'global adjustment fees' and, yes, Premier Wynne is staying the course to produce more so-called 'green energy'. The truth is Ontario is over-producing electricity, and over-charging for it, and over 300,000 manufacturing jobs have left Ontario as a result. Meanwhile, Premier Wynne is giving our excess power away to the U.S., Manitoba and Quebec to get it off the grid -- sometimes it is even sold for a few cents a KWh.

Chiarelli stated a gold mine in Northern Ontario saved $20M in one year to take our excess power off the grid and there are many Ontario companies that similarly benefit; my guess would be large Liberal donors while our hydro rates just keep going up and up...
